THE most famous image of Elizabeth I, staring down at us from countless portraits, is of the Queen as Gloriana, a ruler of legendary power who guided her people's destinies for more than 40 years. A century and a half after her death, Horace Walpole summed up the essentials: "A pale Roman nose, a head of hair loaded with crowns and powdered with diamonds, a vast ruff, a vaster farthingale, and a bushel of pearls, are the features by which everybody knows at once the pictures of Queen Elizabeth."
