Lange Sought To Star in `Cousin Bette'

HOLLYWOOD Two-time Academy Award-winner Jessica Lange is in negotiations to star in an adaptation of Honore de Balzac's classic comedy of manners "Cousin Bette."

The project will mark the feature film debut of Tony winner Des McAnuff, who directed the successful Broadway shows "Tommy," "Big River" and "Guys and Dolls."

"Bette" tells of the drawing room intrigues of the Hulot family, complete with adultery, fortune-hunting and cads of the lowest order.

Previously, the BBC adapted the French novel in 1972, and it aired in the United States on PBS' "Masterpiece Theater."
