Attention was again focused on the literary works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning after years of oblivion. The present restoration is concentrated on the political tone of her works, her preoccupation with the Italian Risorgimento and battle with her psychological and artistic wholeness and coherence. Henry James, acting as her antagonist, analyzes these aspects of her life in relation to her works in 'William Westmore Story and His Friends.' James doubted Browning's devotion to the Italian cause. He freely expressed his reservations about the poetess and her poetry.
