A study of book reviews in the established English literary journal 'Athenaeum' gives an idea of English response to 19th century American novels. In the 1870s response was positive and the innovations being made in American fiction were seen as welcome. Analytical novels were seen as typically American and novels of romance as English. In the 1880s the inaction of analytical novels was seen as problematic. This attitude is typified in the reviews of Henry James' 'A Portrait of a Lady.' By the 1890s, American novels were accepted as a matter of course.
