The year got off to a flying start with Colm Toibin's The Master (Picador [pounds sterling]7.99 . [pounds sterling]7.99 free p&p), a wonderfully sympathetic exploration of the interior landscape of the great American novelist Henry James. A novelist writing a novel about another novelist perhaps sounds claustrophobic, but I can't think of a finer fictional illustration of the relationship between an artist's life and work.
