Doctor Austin Sloper:

He seems outwardly a rather kindly man, successful in his noble
profession of medicine, though having had more than his share of bad luck. He
had lost both his beautiful young wife and his son, and was left, as a kind of
consolation prize, with his daughter Catherine, whom he unconsciously
contrasts unfavorably with his wife, who had the same name, to the detriment
