Mrs. Penniman continues to correspond with Morris, telling him that the
Doctor still hates him, and will not relent. Catherine, she adds, seems to be
expecting to be married soon. Mrs. Penniman makes some helpful suggestions
about an elopement, which Morris simply ignores.
Mrs. Penniman suggests, half jokingly and half naively, that Morris
might bring a lawsuit against the Doctor. But his answer is that he is beaten
