Introductory Chapter
A story about a ghost's appearing to a little boy in an old house had
just held the attention of a gathering on Christmas eve in an old house like
the one in the story. It seems, as narrated by the author (more specifically,
an "I" in the novel), that the boy in the story woke up his mother, sleeping
in the same room, to confront the same apparition. It was this aspect of the
