Madame Merle, who had come to Florence at the invitation of Mrs.
Touchett, did gently mention Gilbert Osmond as a man she wanted Isabel to
meet, but she did so with a great deal more subtlety than was evident in the
way she spoke of Isabel to Osmond. All in all, Madame Merle made it clear that
he was not a person to miss Isabel, with Ralph as her guide, visited all the
museums and sights of Florence and walked around the streets of the city with
