Chapter XIII

Wishing to speak to someone about her refusal, Isabel went to her uncle
and quite directly told him that Warburton had proposed to her and that she
intended to refuse him. Isabel found that Warburton had written his intentions
to Mr. Touchett three days before. After speaking to her uncle, Isabel thought
of Caspar Goodwood, but not with any intention to marry him.

Caspar seemed to deprive Isabel of her sense of freedom. He represented
to her a forceful figure, who yet refused to accept the decision ...
