The novel opens during afternoon tea on the lawn of an old English
country house. There are three men present: an old man seated in a deep wicker
- chair and two younger men strolling before the old man. The old man, Mr.
Daniel Touchett, a retired American banker who has come from America thirty
years before and has been owner of the impressive house for twenty years,
still retains the unmistakable stamp of an American; but he is now no longer
