Introduction:
Daisy Miller: A Study first appeared in Cornhill Magazine in England in
1878 and came out in book form the following year. This publication occurred
after an American publisher had rejected it. The story was an immediate
success and projected James into fame for the first time. At first, the
character of Daisy was considered an "outrage." Subsequently, that opinion
changed. To many critics, this short novel is a full expression of James's
