Henry James was a widely respected American writer. He is remembered mainly for his 20 novels, but he also wrote plays, short stories, and essays. James was born in New York City to a family that valued education highly. His brother, William James, was a famous philosopher and psychologist. The family traveled widely in Europe when Henry was a child.

In 1876, he settled in England. His own experiences as an American in Europe inspired much of his work. James was interested in the differences in attitudes of the people who lived on both sides of the Atlantic. Many of his ...
