We crossed the bridge over the moat and pressed the buzzer embedded in the massive oak doors.

The towers of the castle loomed under the seamless slate of gray sky. My Danish friend, Karsten, grinned from ear to ear. "I'm excited about this, too," he said.

We were going to have tea with a countess.

Explaining how my wife and I ended up there - at a medieval castle rising from the flat countryside on the Danish island of Funen - takes a couple of short digressions. And what is travel but a series of digressions? Herewith, I digress:
