Hans Christian Andersen was born April 2, 1805, in Odense, Denmark. Although he was born to a poor shoemaker and washerwoman, his father loved the theater and frequently brought his son along. Hans, too, was immediately smitten. During Hans's life, others recognized his talent and supported him through school and in finding employment as a playwrite.
