COPENHAGEN (dpa) Hans Christian Andersen has entranced children and adults alike with his fairy tale classics, from The Little Mermaid to The Emperors New Clothes.
Today, April 2, Denmark celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of this son of a poor cobbler. The date marks the official launch of a year of festivities centred on his work.
Among the many guests from all walks of life will be Brazilian footballer Pele, Nobel Literature laureate Guenter Grass, US literary critic Harold Bloom and the singer Nina Hagen.
