Harvard University scholar Maria Tatar has truly been a literary fairy godmother for readers who take their fairy tales seriously. I eagerly picked up Tatar's "The Annotated Brothers Grimm" when my daughter and I were reading and rereading many of the Grimms' fairy tales at bedtime. We both enjoyed wondering how badly the tales would end for the villains as we braced ourselves for the Grimms' grim handiwork, and I admired Tatar's insightful notes on the margins -- the stories behind the stories if you will.
