In his cautionary tale "The Emperor's New Clothes," Hans Christian Andersen
tells of two tricksters who persuaded a vain emperor they could weave a
wonderfully fine new cloth and tailor him a splendid new suit. In fact,
they said, the cloth would be so fine that fools and men unfit for their
positions would be unable to see it. They then pretended to weave, and
when the officials sent by the emperor to report progress could see nothing
on the loom they were afraid to say so for fear of being branded a fool
