The United States component of a worldwide celebration of Hans Christian Andersen's birth in Denmark 200 years ago was launched Tuesday by Danish Crown Prince Frederik and his Australian-born wife, Princess Mary.

The yearlong bicentennial, honoring the man who has been called the father of the fairy tale, is to be marked with about 300 events in more than 40 nations.
