Casting Sean Connery as H. Rider Haggard's adventurer, Allan Quatermain, is probably not a bad idea. "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" is just not the movie for it.

At its best, it's reminiscent of the Hammer Studio fantasy and horror movies of the 1960s but with an orgy of state-of-the-art special effects. At its worst, it features stiff, drawing-room performances from most of its actors and a self-aware, wink-wink attitude that passes for humor.

It plays more like a comic book than the oddly lyrical and entertaining "The Hulk." And as far as period fantasies go, it lacks the breezy wit ...
