Pfc. Grant Allen Dampier joined the Army for his kids -- to provide for their future, to be a role model, to protect them.
Now, their mother is trying to make the three girls, ages 1 through 5, understand why their daddy isn't coming home.
"They know he's gone," Dampier's wife, Heidi, said Wednesday from her home in Merrill, Wis. "They know he's never coming home, but I don't think they understand what 'never' is and how long forever is."
