The Castle has been available in English since 1930 only in the translation of Edwin and Willa Muir, initially in Max Brod's first German edition (1926) but by 1954 expanded to include the perhaps less finished material found in Brod's small and politically restricted second edition of 1935. Mark Harman has now translated the critical German edition (1982) of Sir Malcolm Pasley, which is a scrupulous reading of the unfinished manuscript.
