Franz Kafka's short story 'The Metamorphosis' is well known is China and became in 1979 the first of Kafka's works to be translated into Chinese. Pu Songlings 'Kampfgrille' and Kafka's 'Metamorphosis' show that they have influenced each other. Kafka used characteristics of Chinese storytelling technique and turned them into a style of his own. The Chinese could by reading this story of Kafka's in which the main character turns into an insect to escape family and social problems exercise a veiled criticism of such problems in their own country.
