Published posthumously under the title Amerika, this novel was originally
entitled The Boy Who Was Never More Heard Of. To understand its full
importance, the reader should be aware of Kafka's own interest in socialism
and its place in a caiitalist society. As a young student, he interested
himself in movements dealing with social and political freedom, although he
never actually joined any party. His nature was such that he could not adhere
totally to any socialist group because of his natural tendency toward
