The Trial

General Comments:

As a novel, The Trial shows a structural unity and stylistic mastery
which makes it one of Kafka's more mature works. It deals with punishment, but
not the type of symbolical mechanized punishment of In the Penal Colony.
Instead, Kafka gives us a vision of punishment growing out of a highly
debatable form of justice. This vision, in the long run, was derived from the
author's own guilt feelings. The theme of the book is the proceedings to which
the main character, a bank clerk called Joseph K. (whom we shall refer to as
