General Comments:
Many interpretations of Kafka's novel, The Castle, have been offered in
the past, most of them stressing the symbolism which gives the work its unique
stamp. As we have pointed out before, however, a novel's literary worth cannot
be too great if the reader must necessarily approach it with sound knowledge
of Christian or Jewish theology or Freudian symbolism. A critic like Friedrich
