In The Penal Colony
Written in 1914 and published in 1919, In the Penal Colony is the longest
of all Kafka's short stories. It is particularly interesting to study it in
relation to the theme of dual reality we have just discussed, for in it Kafka
ventures tentatively into the metaphysical world of the Divine which
fascinated and terrified him. Here again we have a "thing" as we had in "The
Worries of a Family Man (Odradek)," which stands not only at the center of
Kafka's story, but also obviously at the center of his thinking. In this case
