This collection of stories was published in 1919, as was In the Penal
Colony, which we will be discussing shortly. By the time he came to write
these works, Kafka had matured enough artistically and intellectually to be
able to employ a device like the parable to reveal the reality behind the
"real" world of empirical evidence. Before we examine the contents of A
Country Doctor and all their implications, however, it is necessary to look at
the parable as it has been used traditionally. We shall then be able to see
