It can safely be said that the intellectual trends of the Wilhelmian
period of German literature were on the whole political in nature. Great
changes were taking place geographically, psychologically, and politically in
Central Europe, and the resultant spiritual and historical upheavals of the
age had a marked impact on the cultural climate into which Kafka was born. It
was an age of crisis in German history, and the drama of 1870 was proving but
