THE WIFE of Michael Howard has told how her husband wooed her by sending her the book Tender Is the Night, in the first joint interview given by the couple since Mr Howard's election as Conservative leader last year.

Sandra Howard, a former model, was married to Nigel Grandfield, an advertising executive, when she met Mr Howard, then a barrister, at a Red Cross charity ball.

He heard that she had read no F. Scott Fitzgerald and seduced her by sending her a copy of the novel. The Howards married in 1975, and Mr Grandfield - who was Mrs Howard's third husband - cited Mr Howard in his divorce.
