Now and then I get this letter: "I'm enclosing the first three chapters of my novel. Would you read them and give me a few tips? And could you direct me to a good agent?"

To which I reply that I have never even met a literary agent, that the art of writing fiction is an art that eludes me, and that I wish the author good luck in finding a publisher. Cordially yours.

Instead of that unhelpful response, I recently have discovered a better reply: "Read the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald," I should say to an aspiring writer, "and profit from his example." The centennial anniversary of ...
