THE DISCREET black silks with red cap were not the only similarity that the US horseracing buff Ogden Phipps shared with the great British owner and breeder Jim Joel.
Joel, who died in 1992, was one of those unavoidable figures of Britain in its post-war renaissance; son of immigrants, war veteran, a maker of millions in business, and consummate enjoyer of a fulsome career on the turf, winning both the Derby and Grand National. Phipps was the American version of the same, a towering society figure who, were it not for his real life, might have existed in the mind of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
