Chapter V
Once Nick understands the Gatsby-Daisy relationship, he (and the reader)
also understands that Gatsby's entire "production" is aimed at the winning of
an ideal, and there is a marked increase in urgency when Nick discovers the
entire area of West Egg ablaze one evening with "unreal" light. It is Gatsby's
mansion, where the lights have been turned on in every room. This is a very
