Chapter I

Very important to The Great Gatsby is the voice of the narrator, Nick
Carroway, a young man of good Mid-western family who had "gone east" to New
York for a career in stocks-and-bonds after serving in World War I. Nick
actually narrates the entire novel, which is written in "first person": that
is, the person of Nick himself. The fact that The Great Gatsby is "told"
through the mind and personality of Nick Carroway is basic to the
structure - and meaning - of the book.
