IN 1932, FRENCH poet André Gide wrote that Emile Zola's novel Germinal, "which I am reading for the third (or fourth) time, seems more admirable than ever." Gide considered the book one of the ten best novels in the French language.' Although it is not a classic primary source for environmental historians, Germinal merits more attention from scholars in the field. It suggests fruitful possibilities for integrating environmental and social history as well as exposing the environmental dimensions of modernity.
