Parts I and II of Germinal contain eleven chapters, six and five
respectively, which concern themselves with an outsider-narrator, similar to
Zola himself as he visited such strike-ridden towns of Northern France as
Anzin, in search of notes for his novel. We become gradually acquainted with
the narrator's new way of life as we follow Etienne Lantier through Zola's
first ten chapters, from his arrival at Montsou to the conclusion of his first
