Time was when the operatic collaboration of Alfred Bruneau and Emile Zola was as highly rated in France as the Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal partnership in Germany. Zola acted as librettist or inspirer to some eight Bruneau operas of which L'Attaque du Moulin, from the Paris Opera-Comique in 1893, was the most successful and achieved a vogue lasting into the 1920s. After that its popularity declined, but following decades of comparative neglect it was revived last Autumn at Giessen, an enterprising University City near Frankfurt am Main, where I saw it on 8 September.
