The annual worldwide celebration of French literary culture kicks off in London this week, with readings, debates and films exploring the talent of Emile Zola, who died 100 years ago, as well as contemporary comic-strip art. Professor Colette Becker assesses Zola's modernity, while two film adaptations of La Bete Humaine, by Jean Renoir (1938) and Fritz Lang (1954), receive screenings on Thursday.
