I believe the French writer who made this statement was implying the difference between looking and truly seeing. Sometimes the photo's composition comes to you in a matter of seconds and you scramble to trip the shutter before that moment in time and space evaporates. Other times, it's like a Magic Eye poster - you almost go blind before the vision abruptly appears. When it does show itself, it's hard to see it any other way.
