CONCORD, Mass. -- Nathaniel Hawthorne had a house in this historic, literary hub northwest of Boston. So do fellow 19th-century authors Louisa May Alcott and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

And native son Henry David Thoreau?

Yes, but perhaps not for long, preservationists say.

The white clapboard house where Thoreau was born still stands. But the privately owned home and the 18.4 acres of prime land it sits on are for sale.

A campaign is under way to save the property from developers.
