Nathaniel Hawthorne has a house in this historic, literary hub northwest of Boston. So do fellow 19th-century authors Louisa May Alcott and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

And native son Henry David Thoreau?

Yes, but perhaps not for long, say preservationists.

The white clapboard house where Thoreau was born still stands. But the privately owned home and 18.4 acres of prime land its sits on are for sale.

Now a campaign is under way to save the property from developers.

"We can't lose this," says Doris Smith, who lives next door. "It could never, ever be replaced if we do."
