Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the greatest American authors. He was
born in Salem, Massachusetts, and attended Bowdoin College in Maine.
Hawthorne's first writings did not earn any money. He worked for a
while in Boston, Massachusetts, in the Customs House where U.S. taxes
on imported goods were collected. He married Sophia Peabody in 1842,
and they moved to Concord, Massachusetts. Many famous writers, including
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, lived in Concord at that
time.
Hawthorne's book The Scarlet Letter, published in 1850, brought him fame. It is ...
