One of the most important figures for our understanding of the life and opinions of Elizabeth Barrett Browning whilst she was living in Italy is undoubtedly Eliza Ogilvy (née Harris Dick, 1822-1912), a Scotswoman brought up in Perth and, briefly, India, where she lived with her grandfather, William Dick, who was chief surgeon to the East India Company in Calcutta. In 1843 Eliza married her husband, David Ogilvy, and five years later the couple moved to Italy where they became friends with the Brownings when they visited Florence in June 1848 and were introduced by Barrett Browning's cousin, ...
