From Bobby Shafto to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the region has provided notable homes for the rich and famous
DURHAM'S halls and houses are an important part of the county's history, but it was often the people that made them places of interest.
Some could even aspire to celebrity status. Take Whitworth Hall, near Spennymoor, for example. It was the home and birthplace in 1732 of Robert Shafto, a Durham MP immortalised in the popular children's song, Bonny Bobby Shafto.
It is said that it was his part in breaking the heart of one Bridget Bellasis, of Brancepeth Castle, that inspired the song.
