BARRE - It's a wonder the celebrated film director George Cukor, noted for his legendary way with actresses such as Katherine Hepburn, never got his hands on Elizabeth von Arnim's 1922 novel, "Enchanted April."

The chances are very likely it would have been remembered more vividly than the 1935 RKO Pictures flop directed by Harry (who?) Beaumont. Mike Newell's picturesque 1992 remake was good enough, however, to inspire first-time playwright Matthew Barber to bring it to the stage in 2000. In turn, both film and play cast ...
