In the talking movies, Tarzan and Jane never married, although they were wed in the silent versions and in Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels.
"Once they started playing house, it was real interesting," says Gabe Essoe, author of "Tarzan of the Movies."
"The movies tried to portray (the relationship) as boyfriend and girlfriend or brother and sister rather than husband and wife."
In the eyes of the censors, no marriage meant no sex. And that meant no baby.
In 1939, the producers solved that problem with "Tarzan Finds a Son."
