Tarzan has always been a powerful symbol of animal sexuality. Edgar Rice Burroughs' first story about the ape man was published in 1914, and it took just four years for him to make the leap to movies in "Tarzan of the Apes," with Elmo Lincoln in the title role and Enid Markey as Jane. Their 1918 sequel was entitled, not so subtly, "Romance of Tarzan."
