THE AWARD-winning foreign correspondent, feature writer and erstwhile gossip columnist Ross Benson has died aged 58. Only last year the Daily Mail reporter won the Edgar Wallace award for his reports from Baghdad ,for bringing "the filthy reality of war to readers in a way that few will forget".
Benson, who was a contemporary of Prince Charles at Gordonstoun, established himself as one of journalism's most dapper characters.
Known as the "James Bond of Fleet Street" his expensive shoe collection rivalled that of Imelda Marcos and he had the shiniest footwear in town.
