The Independent on Sunday's distinguished political columnist Alan Watkins (above) won the prestigious Edgar Wallace Award 'for fine writing' in this year's London Press Club awards. The winner was announced on Wednesday at Claridge's. The judges said: 'He has a long political memory, a beautifully clear prose style and a sense of humour which " to quote one of his favourite phrases " adds to the gaiety of nations.'
