Reed, Sir Carol (1906–1976) British film director who made some exceptional films in the postwar years. He was knighted in 1952. Reed, who was born in London and educated at King's School, Canterbury, began his career as an actor in 1924. In 1927 he joined Edgar Wallace as stage director but in the early 1930s joined Ealing Studios under Basil Dean (1888–1978). His first film as director was Midshipman Easy (1934).
